Feral cats are abandoned, dumped, or lost domestic cats that have reverted to the wild to survive. Offspring of these cats are born feral. These animals are doing what they can to survive and are not hurting anyone.
Recently in my neighborhood, some of my neighbors were complaining and threatening animal control as the option to resolve our feral community. Unfortunately, any feral animal that winds up in animal control’s facility will likely be euthanized. (400 cats and dogs are killed at shelters every 60 seconds in the U.S.) And why would anyone elect for that option when there is another, better option.
Trap, Neuter & Release
- Spayed/neutered cats do not: Roam … Spray … Fight … Breed … Spread Diseases.
- These cats will keep other cats from entering the territory.
- They destroy mice, rats and snakes and keep these pests from setting-up in our neighborhood.
- Once they have been spayed/neutered, they are very beneficial and peaceful animals; normally only coming out at night.
These sweet cats deserve a decent, good life with a reliable food source. They just need a chance.
Thank you to one of my favorite local organizations, Feral Friends, for this information.
http://www.feralfriends.org offers some great insight on the trap/neuter/return program and will provide guidance and tools for trapping the cats. They also have relationships with area vets that can make the neutering process affordable for feral animals (appx $37 for males/$47 for females).
